History of Austintown
Austintown Township was started in 1793. It was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, a large area of land bought from the Connecticut Land Company. The land was measured out in squares, each about 5 miles (8 km) on every side.
Austintown got its name from Calvin Austin, a judge from Warren. In 1794, the first settler, John McCollum from New Jersey, moved here. Over the 1800s, more people came to live in Austintown. By 1880, many coal miners and their families lived here, and the population grew to 2,502.
A post office was opened in 1815 and was first called Orange. Its name was changed to Austintown in 1872. The post office closed in 1917, and mail was then sent to West Austintown, Ohio.
After World War II, Austintown grew much faster. Many people from Youngstown moved to the eastern part of the township. The main part of Austintown also grew along Ohio State Route 46. In 1980, the U.S. Census Bureau officially named Austintown a "census-designated place." This included the more developed parts of the township.
Geography and Location
The Austintown "census-designated place" (CDP) covers a bit less than half of the whole Austintown Township. It's mostly on the eastern side of the township, right next to the western edge of Youngstown.
The total area of the CDP is about 30.2 square kilometers (11.7 square miles). Most of this area, about 30.1 square kilometers (11.6 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square kilometers (0.03 square miles), is water.
Major roads pass through or near Austintown. Ohio State Route 11 is a highway that goes north and south through the CDP. You can get on or off it at Exit 39. Interstate 680 goes east to west through the northern part of the CDP, but it doesn't have an exit here. Interstate 80 is just north of the CDP, and you can get on it from Exit 223.
