A Church with a Journey
The Old Fort Church was first built in 1850. Its original location was on Schoolbell Road, near Christiana. Imagine building a whole church and then moving it!
In 1897, the church was carefully taken apart. Then, it was rebuilt piece by piece at its current location. This shows how important the church was to its community.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The Old Fort Church is a one-story building. It is made of brick and has a roof shaped like a triangle (a gable roof). The church has three sections on each side.
You can see special windows that are shaped like tall, pointed arches. These are called lancet-type windows. They let light into the main part of the church. The ends of the roof have cool decorations. These are made of different types of wood shingles painted dark green.
A Special Place in History
The Old Fort Church is recognized as an important historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's officially protected because of its historical value. It helps us remember the history of African-American communities in Delaware.
