A Look at Church History
The Old Hickory Methodist Church started in 1925. At first, the church members met in a place called the "little gym." This spot is now where the Old Hickory Community Center stands.
Building the Church Home
Work on the main church building, called the sanctuary, began soon after. While it was being built, services were held in the basement. The sanctuary was completed in 1929. The very first service in the new sanctuary was held on the first Sunday of 1929.
Over the years, the church building grew and changed.
- In 1936, comfortable pews were put in. These replaced the folding chairs people used before.
- An extra building for education was added in 1939.
- A second floor was built onto this educational part in 1954.
- In 1967, the sanctuary was updated and redecorated.
Special Additions and Recognition
Beautiful Stained-glass windows were put into the church in 1983. These windows often tell stories or show symbols. In May 1985, the church building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This honor helps protect important historical sites.
More updates happened in the 1990s.
- New, soft pews were added in 1990.
- Many special items were given to the church. These included new Bibles for the pews.
- Other items like a lectern, wedding candle, and communion ware were also added.
A special Prayer Room was built in 1982. This room offers a quiet place for reflection.
Recent Changes
In 2024, the Old Hickory Methodist Church made a big decision. It chose to separate from the larger United Methodist Church group. Because of this, the church dropped the word "United" from its name. It is now known simply as Old Hickory Methodist Church.
