The Old Marion County Courthouse is a really old and important building in Tazewell, Georgia. It was built way back in 1848. For a short time, it was the main government building for Marion County, Georgia, where important decisions were made.

Just two years later, in 1850, the county's main office moved to a new town called Buena Vista, Georgia. This historic building isn't just a courthouse anymore! It also served as a meeting place for a group called the Marion Lodge No. 14 F. & A.M. This group is part of the Free and Accepted Masons, which is a very old and well-known social organization. Today, you can find a special historical marker at the site, telling visitors about its past.

What is a Courthouse?

A courthouse is a building where legal cases are heard. It's also where local government business happens. Think of it as the main office for a county. Important records are kept there, and judges make decisions.

The County Seat

When a town is called a "county seat," it means it's the main town for that county. It's where the courthouse and other important government offices are located. For a short time, Tazewell was the county seat for Marion County.

A Place of History

The Old Marion County Courthouse was built in 1848. It was designed by an architect named L.W. Wall. The building shows a style of architecture called "Carpenter." This means it was likely built using wood and traditional carpentry skills.

Joining the National Register

This special building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building. It also makes sure people remember its story.

The Old Marion County Courthouse is located on Georgia State Route 137. It stands as a reminder of Marion County's early history.
