Marion County is a county in the west central part of Georgia. It is named after General Francis Marion from South Carolina. He was a hero during the American Revolutionary War.

As of the 2020 census, about 7,498 people lived in Marion County. The main town and county seat is Buena Vista. The county was officially created on December 14, 1827.

Marion County is part of the larger Columbus metropolitan area. This area includes parts of both Georgia and Alabama. You can also find the unique art site of Pasaquan in Marion County.

Geography

Marion County covers a total area of about 367 square miles. Most of this area, about 366 square miles, is land. Only a small part, about 1.5 square miles, is water.

The county is home to parts of several important river systems. These include the Kinchafoonee-Muckalee sub-basin and the Middle Chattahoochee River sub-basin. The Middle Flint River sub-basin also covers a large part of the county. These rivers are all part of the larger Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin.

Education

The Marion County School District is in charge of all public schools in the county. It has a primary school for younger students and a secondary school for older students. These schools teach students from preschool all the way up to grade 12.
