What is the Oldplainsman Plant?
The oldplainsman is a type of plant called a biennial herb. This means it usually lives for two years. In its first year, it grows leaves close to the ground. In its second year, it grows taller and produces flowers.
How Tall Does It Grow?
This plant can grow quite tall. It can reach up to 100 cm (39 in) in height. That's about 39 inches, or a little over 3 feet!
What Do Its Flowers Look Like?
Each oldplainsman plant can produce many flower heads. A single stem might have 20 to 60 flower heads. Each of these heads is packed with 40 to 60 small flowers. These tiny flowers are called disc flowers. They can be white, yellow, purple, or red. Interestingly, this plant does not have the larger, petal-like ray flowers that many daisies have.
Different Kinds of Oldplainsman
There are two main types, or varieties, of the oldplainsman:
- Hymenopappus artemisiifolius var. artemisiifolius: This variety is found in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
- Hymenopappus artemisiifolius var. riograndensis: This type grows in the Río Grande Valley in southern Texas.
