Her Life Story

Olga Broumas grew up on the Greek island of Syros. She received a special scholarship, called a Fulbright fellowship, to study in the United States. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a degree in architecture. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Oregon, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree.

After finishing her education, Olga Broumas helped start a school called Freehand, Inc. This school was in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She also taught there, helping other women learn to write and create art. The school closed in 1987.

Throughout her career, Broumas has taught creative writing at several universities. These include the University of Idaho and Goddard College. Today, she is a Professor Emerita at Brandeis University. This means she is a retired professor who is still highly respected by the university.

Awards and Achievements

Olga Broumas has received many important awards for her poetry. In 1977, she was chosen by famous poet Stanley Kunitz for the Yale Younger Poets Series. She was the first person who was not a native English speaker to win this award.

She has also received other special honors. These include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. These awards recognize her important contributions to poetry and literature.
