Olga Gil Medrano is a brilliant Spanish mathematician born in 1956. She is known for her important work in mathematics and for being a leader in the field. From 2006 to 2009, she was the president of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society, which is a big honor!

She is also a professor of mathematics at the University of Valencia in Spain. At the university, she helps manage international connections and partnerships as the Vice-Rector for International Relations and Cooperation. Olga Gil Medrano studies special areas of math called differential geometry and geometric analysis. Since 2000, she has also been very interested in helping everyone understand and enjoy mathematics.

Early Life and Education

Olga Gil Medrano was born in a city called Burgos in Spain in 1956. When she was a student at the University of Valencia, some people suggested she study engineering. However, Olga knew what she wanted! She chose to study mathematics and physics instead, following her passion.

She worked very hard and earned her first advanced degree, a Ph.D., from the University of Valencia in 1982. Her big research paper for this degree was about "Certain Geometric and Topological Properties of Some Classes of Almost-Product Manifolds." Later, she went to France to study even more. She completed another advanced degree, called a "doctorat de troisième cycle," at Pierre and Marie Curie University in 1985. Her second research paper was about a topic called "Sur le Problème de Yamabe concernat les variétés localement conformement plates."

Career and Leadership

After finishing her studies in France, Olga Gil Medrano returned to the University of Valencia. She became a professor there and has been an important part of the university's leadership since 2000.

In 2006, she made history! Olga Gil Medrano became the first woman ever to be elected president of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society. This was a huge step forward for women in science and mathematics in Spain.

Honors and Recognition

Olga Gil Medrano's contributions to mathematics have been recognized by many. In September 2017, the University of Valencia held a special event called a workshop. This workshop focused on geometric analysis and was held to honor her amazing work and achievements in the field.
