Olga Golodets (born 1 June 1962) is a Russian politician and economist. She served as a deputy prime minister for Russia from 2012 to 2020. This made her the highest-ranking woman in the Russian government during that time.

Early Life and Education

Olga Golodets was born in Moscow, the capital city of Russia, on 1 June 1962. She studied economics at Lomonosov Moscow State University and earned her degree in 1984. Her uncle, Adamas Golodets, was a well-known professional football player and coach for the FC Dynamo Moscow team.

Career Highlights

Olga Golodets started her career in 1984 as a researcher. She worked at an institute that studied labor and employment issues until 1997.

Early Roles

  • 1997-1999: She became the director at the Reformugol Foundation.
  • 1999-2001 & 2002-2008: She worked at a large company called Norilsk Nickel. There, she was in charge of human resources and social policies.
  • 2001: She was appointed as a deputy governor for social issues in the Taimyr region of Russia.
  • 2008-2010: She led an association for employers across different industries in Russia. She also chaired the board of the Soglasiye Insurance Company.

Leadership in Moscow

From December 2010 to May 2012, Olga Golodets served as the deputy mayor of Moscow. In this important role, she was responsible for education and healthcare in the city. She was also a member of the Moscow city government during this period.

Deputy Prime Minister

On 21 May 2012, Olga Golodets was appointed as one of the seven deputy prime ministers in the government led by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. Her main responsibility was to oversee social affairs and policies for the entire country. This position, focusing on social affairs, was created for the first time in May 2012.

She was known for supporting market reforms in Russia. Some people believed she had a close relationship with Prime Minister Medvedev. She also had business connections with Mikhail Prokhorov, a businessman who later became a politician. In fact, it was Prokhorov who suggested her for the role of deputy prime minister. Their connection came from their time working together at Norilsk Nickel. Because she hadn't worked as a federal government official before, some people saw her as a "dark horse" – someone unexpected for such a high position.

On 15 January 2020, Olga Golodets resigned from her position as deputy prime minister. This happened after President Vladimir Putin suggested changes to the country's constitution. After leaving the government, on 11 February 2020, she joined the board of Sberbank, one of Russia's largest banks, as a deputy chair.

Sanctions

In 2022, the British government placed sanctions on Olga Golodets. This was related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Honours

  • 2015: Commander of the Order of Saint-Charles.
