What is the Olinda Landfill?
A landfill is a special site for burying waste. The Olinda Landfill is a very big one. It covers about 565-acre (2.29 km2) of land. About 420-acre (1.7 km2) of this area is used for burying trash.
How Much Trash Does It Handle?
This landfill can handle a lot of trash every day. It has the ability to process 8,000 tons of waste daily. On average, it receives about 6,800 tons each day. That's about 85% of its full capacity! The City of Brea, where the landfill is located, sends about 30% of all the trash that goes there.
Who Manages the Landfill?
The Olinda Landfill first opened in 1960. It is owned by Orange County. The Orange County Waste & Recycling Department manages how the landfill operates. They make sure everything runs smoothly.

What Will Happen to the Landfill?
The Olinda Landfill is planned to close in December 2021. There were once ideas to make the landfill bigger. These plans would have expanded it into Carbon Canyon, near Brea Olinda High School. However, these expansion plans were stopped in 1996. This happened because the Land and Water Conservation Fund decided to add nearby government-owned land to Chino Hills State Park instead. After the landfill closes, the area will be cleaned up and planted with new trees and plants. It will then become a part of Chino Hills State Park.
