Olivério Mário de Oliveira Pinto (born March 11, 1896 – died June 13, 1981) was a Brazilian scientist. He was a zoologist, someone who studies animals. He was also a physician, or doctor.

About His Life

Olivério Pinto was born in 1896 in Jaú, Brazil. When he was young, his family moved to Salvador. He loved studying animals, which is called zoology. But there were no universities for zoology in Salvador. So, he decided to study medicine instead. He went to the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia. This was the first medical school in Brazil. He finished his studies in 1921 when he was 25.

After finishing medical school, Pinto moved to Araraquara in 1921. He started working as a doctor there. He also opened the first lab for medical tests in that area. He taught Natural Sciences at a new school for dentistry and pharmacy. In 1924, he married Alice Alves de Camargo.

Working with Animals

Pinto started drawing detailed pictures for Afrânio do Amaral. Amaral was a zoologist and led the Instituto Butantan. He saw how talented and smart Pinto was. So, Amaral offered Pinto a job as a researcher in zoology.

In 1939, Pinto became the director of the Zoology Department. This department was part of São Paulo's Agriculture Secretariat. He retired in 1956. But even after retiring, he kept doing his research.

Olivério Pinto passed away on June 13, 1981. He was 85 years old. He had traveled with his family and became sick. He was taken to a hospital in Piracicaba, where he died.

His Important Works

Pinto's most important work was a book called Catálogo das Aves do Brasil. This means "Brazil's Catalog of Birds." He published it between 1938 and 1944. It came out in two parts and had 1266 pages.

This book was the first to organize information about Brazilian birds. It listed their names, how they are classified, and where they live. In 1978, he published an updated version. It was called Novo Catálogo das Aves do Brasil, or "Brazil's New Catalog of Birds."
