The Story of Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist is born in a place called a workhouse, where poor people had to live and work. His mother dies right after he is born, leaving him an orphan. Mr. Bumble, who runs the workhouse, is very mean. He makes Oliver and the other orphans work hard and gives them very little food, usually just a small bowl of porridge.
One day, Oliver bravely asks for more food. Mr. Bumble is furious and sells Oliver to Mr. Sowerberry, an undertaker. An undertaker is someone who arranges funerals. Oliver becomes an apprentice there, which means he works to learn the trade. But Noah, another apprentice, is very cruel to Oliver.
Tired of this unhappy life, Oliver runs away to the big city of London. There, he meets a boy known as the Artful Dodger. The Dodger takes Oliver to the home of Fagin, an old man who seems kind at first. However, Fagin teaches homeless boys to become pickpockets, which means they steal wallets and other things from people's pockets.
Oliver is trained to steal on the streets. One day, he sees the Artful Dodger and another boy stealing a handkerchief from a gentleman named Mr. Brownlow. Oliver gets scared and runs away. Mr. Brownlow thinks Oliver is the thief and has him arrested. Oliver is taken to a magistrate, a type of judge, and is treated like a criminal.
Mr. Brownlow steps in and tells the magistrate that he didn't actually see Oliver steal anything. He feels sorry for Oliver and invites him to live in his home. Oliver finally finds a kind place to stay.
But a bad man named Mr. Monks wants to find out about Oliver. He talks to Mr. and Mrs. Bumble, who give him a special locket that Oliver's mother had. Mr. Monks wants Oliver to get into trouble and go to prison. This is because he wants to claim an inheritance that rightfully belongs to Oliver. An inheritance is money or property someone gets after a family member dies.
