Olivier Occéan's Soccer Journey

Starting in College

Olivier Occéan began his soccer career playing for colleges in the United States. He played for Essex County College and then for the Southern Connecticut Fighting Owls from 2001 to 2003. During his time in college, he was named an NCAA All-American twice. He scored a total of 57 goals, including 21 goals in his final year. He also played for Vermont Voltage in a development league during this time.

After college, Occéan was chosen by the MetroStars in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. However, a Norwegian team called Odd saw him play and offered him a contract. Occéan decided to join Odd in Norway instead of playing in Major League Soccer.

Playing for Odd

Occéan quickly became a key player for Odd in Norway. He earned a starting spot and began scoring goals right away. In his first season with Odd, he was the team's top scorer with 14 goals.

In December 2005, Occéan signed a five-year contract with Lillestrøm. After a good start, he had a tough period without scoring many goals. However, he worked hard and scored 12 goals for the club in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Moving to Germany

Before the 2010–11 season, Occéan moved to Germany. He joined Kickers Offenbach on a free transfer. He had a fantastic start, scoring four goals in his first three games. This made him a favorite with the fans. In his only season there, he scored 16 goals in 30 matches.

Success with Greuther Fürth

On May 25, 2011, Occéan signed a three-year contract with SpVgg Greuther Fürth. He made his debut on July 15. A week later, he scored two goals, helping his team win 4–0.

Occéan scored an important goal in the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) quarter-finals on February 8, 2012. He was named the Canada Soccer Player of the Month for both February and March 2012. He helped Greuther Fürth win the 2. Bundesliga championship. He was also the league's top scorer with 17 goals in 30 games.

Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt

On July 3, 2012, Occéan moved to Eintracht Frankfurt for €1.3 million. He signed a three-year contract. He made his top-league debut on August 25. On September 15, 2012, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga, helping his team win 3–2.

Loan to 1. FC Kaiserslautern

On July 1, 2013, Occéan was loaned to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 2. Bundesliga. This was a two-year loan deal.

Return to Odd

On January 6, 2015, Occéan returned to his former club, Odd, on a half-year loan. On July 8, 2015, he signed a permanent two-and-a-half-year contract with Odd.

Coaching and Playing at Urædd

In 2018, Occéan joined Urædd Fotball in the 3. divisjon. At the same time, he started his coaching career as a youth coach at Urædd.

After playing two seasons for Mjøndalen, he came back to Urædd Fotball for the 2020 season. He played as an assistant coach. He stopped playing professionally at the end of 2020. He continued his role as an assistant coach for the team and a youth coach.

Playing for Canada

Occéan first played for the Canadian national team in May 2004. He played in 28 games for Canada and scored six goals. He played in 15 FIFA World Cup qualification matches. He also played in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He scored an important goal for Canada in a 1–0 win against Cuba in 2012. This was during a World Cup qualification match. Later, in February 2013, FIFA ruled that Occéan had broken rules and used bad language towards officials during that game. Because of this, he received a 6-match suspension. This meant he could not play in official competitive matches for Canada until the suspension was over.
