History of Olney
The area now known as Olney has an interesting past. It wasn't always called Olney!
How Olney Got Its Name
Originally, this community was known by a different name: Nineveh. It was officially "platted" in 1855. When a community is "platted," it means that its streets, blocks, and lots are officially mapped out and recorded. This helps organize the land for homes and businesses. The post office in Olney has been serving the community since 1876. It's not fully known why the name was changed from Nineveh to Olney. Sometimes, communities change their names for various reasons, like honoring a person or place, or simply to have a unique identity.
