Omaha is a city located in Morris County, in the northeastern part of Texas, United States. As of 2022, about 1,403 people live there.

History of Omaha

Long ago, this part of Texas was not very crowded. It was ruled by Spain and then Mexico. After the United States took control, many people moved here from the southern states. This happened before the American Civil War. Farmers grew cotton on large farms called plantations. The area also had many pine trees.

In 1880, a man named Thompson Morris first called the town Morristown. It became a stop on the new St. Louis Southwestern Railway. This train line helped the town grow into a trading center. The US Post Office later changed the name to Gavett.

In 1886, a group of seven men decided to pick a new name for the town. They drew names from a hat. The winner, Hugh Ellis, got to rename the settlement. He chose Omaha, after a town in his home state of Randolph County, Alabama.

By 1890, Omaha had three churches, a school, and a weekly newspaper. About 450 people lived there. The town officially became a city in 1914. A new business started in the area: growing young vegetable plants to sell. During the 1900s, Omaha shipped millions of these plants all over the United States. In 1980, the population was 960, and it grew to almost 1,000 by the year 2000.
