The Omni Providence Hotel is a tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It used to be called The Westin Providence. This hotel is one of the tallest buildings in Providence and the entire state of Rhode Island. It has brick walls and a sloped roof, giving it a classic look.
The Omni Providence Hotel stands about 100 meters (328 feet) tall. It became the fourth-tallest building in Providence on February 15, 2007. This happened when a slightly taller building, The Residences at the Westin, was finished nearby.
With the addition of the Residences tower, the Omni Providence now has 564 rooms. It is still the tallest and largest hotel in Providence. It took this title from the Providence Biltmore hotel, which was built in 1922.
Hotel History
The hotel, first known as The Westin Providence, opened in December 1994. It had 364 rooms when it was completed. This project was part of a bigger construction plan. This plan also included the Rhode Island Convention Center and two parking garages. The hotel hosted its first big event in January 1995.
The hotel was later sold to Omni Hotels & Resorts in October 2012. It officially became the Omni Providence Hotel on January 15, 2013.
The hotel is connected to the Providence Place shopping mall. They are linked by the Providence Skybridge. This special bridge was built by architect Friedrich St. Florian in the year 2000.
Hotel Operations During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many businesses to close. The Omni Providence Hotel had to close to the public in March 2020.
In January 2021, the hotel found a way to get some financial help. Nearby Brown University rented 240 rooms from the hotel. This allowed the university to provide safe housing for their students. It helped students live with more space during the pandemic. The hotel also offered weekly laundry service and a COVID testing site on its third floor for the students.
