The Ondo Kingdom is a very old traditional state in Nigeria. It has been around for over 500 years! Its main city and capital is Ode Ondo.

The kingdom was started by Princess Pupupu. She was one of the twin children of Alafin Oluaso. Back then, having twins was sometimes seen as a bad sign. Because of this, Princess Pupupu and her twins had to leave. She traveled south and settled where the kingdom is today.

Later, her son Airo became the ruler. He went to Benin to learn how to govern from his uncle. When Airo returned, he brought new traditions and ideas from Benin. He changed how the chiefs were ranked in the kingdom. The current ruler is Oba Adesimbo Victor Kiladejo JILO III. He is the 44th Osemawe, which is the traditional title for the ruler of Ondo.

How the Ondo Kingdom Began

There are a few stories about how the Ondo Kingdom started. One popular story says that Ondo was founded by Pupupu, a wife of Oduduwa. Oduduwa is known as the ancestor of the Yoruba people in Ile-Ife.

This story says that Pupupu gave birth to twins. At that time, twins were sometimes thought to bring bad luck. So, Pupupu and her twins were sent away. She traveled south until she reached the area where Ile-Oluji is now. Pupupu became the first ruler of the Ondo Kingdom in the 1500s. Her family members still hold the crown today.

Another story, told by historian Samuel Johnson, is similar. But it says Pupupu was the wife of Ajaka, who was Oduduwa's grandson. A third idea suggests that people from the Kingdom of Benin founded Ondo. This might have happened during the time of King Ozolua.

It's possible that the Ondo people are a mix of both Yoruba and Edo people. The Ondo Kingdom is located near the edge of Yorubaland. Benin City, a major city of the Edo people, is also close by.

Early Rulers and Government

Princess Pupupu was later replaced by her son, Aiho (also called Airo). Aiho set up the main political system for the Ondo state. This system was closely tied to his royal family. He also built the royal palace.

The royal family has four main branches. Each branch was started by one of Aiho's sons. The Osemawe, who is the main king of the Ondo kingdom, is chosen from these different family lines.

The current Osemawe is Oba (Dr.) Victor Adesimbo Ademefun Kiladejo. In 2010, the Ondo Kingdom celebrated its 500th anniversary!

Ondo During Colonial Times

The Ondo Kingdom stayed independent from other powerful groups until the 1800s. At this time, Europeans started to have more contact with the region. Also, there were many changes and conflicts in Yorubaland. These events caused political problems for Ondo.

The Atlantic slave trade grew, and many people in Yorubaland were forced to move. This changed life in the Ondo Kingdom. Before the 1800s, Ondo was unique. It had a council system where leaders rotated among different families. Women also had an important role. They had their own council that advised the men's council.

Also, in Ondo, the king owned all the land. But any person could farm it if they got permission from the local community leader. However, with more people moving around and the slave trade becoming more important, things changed. Power shifted from family lines and land ownership to owning enslaved people.

This led to a lot of conflict in the Ondo Kingdom from 1845 to 1872. During this time, rulers changed quickly. There were wars with other kingdoms and much violence. The capital city even moved three times. People started to worship Orisha more widely. They sometimes performed unusual rituals to try and end the disorder.

When Christian missionaries arrived in Yorubaland in the late 1800s, Ondo was a large kingdom in the forest. But missionaries often focused on other areas. Some missionaries might have thought the Ondo people were different from other Yoruba groups.

However, in 1870, John Hawley Glover became interested in Ondo. He was a British administrator from the Lagos Colony. He wanted to create new trade routes to Lagos. In 1872, Glover helped Ondo and Ife make a peace treaty. They had been enemies for years. This treaty allowed more trade between Lagos and Ondo. Missionary work then began in the Ondo Kingdom in 1875.

On February 20, 1889, the Osemawe of Ondo made an agreement with the British governor of the Lagos Colony. This agreement said that trade between Ondo and the colony would be free. It also said that any disagreements would be settled by someone chosen by the governor.

In 1899, the British officially extended their control over Yorubaland. This made Ondo formally part of the British Empire.

Ondo Kingdom in Modern Nigeria

The Ondo Kingdom continued to exist under British rule. It also survived after Nigeria became independent. On December 29, 2008, the 44th Osemawe, Oba Victor Adesimbo Ademefun Kiladejo, was crowned. This was a big event, with many important people attending.

In the early 1980s, Nigeria faced some political unrest. During this time, Ondo experienced some trouble.
