One California is a tall office building in San Francisco, California. It stands 133.5 meters (about 438 feet) high and has 32 floors! This skyscraper was finished in 1969. It is located in the city's busy Financial District.
When it was first built, One California was one of the tallest buildings in San Francisco. Today, it is the 31st tallest building in the city. A company called Welton Becket Associates designed this impressive structure.
Building History: How One California Grew
One California was built where an older building, the Fife Building, used to stand. It was one of the first modern skyscrapers to be built in San Francisco. When it opened in 1969, it was the fifth tallest building in the city.
In 1970, One California was mentioned in a Newsweek magazine article. This article also talked about two other tall buildings in San Francisco. Many people believe this article helped create the term "Manhattanization". This word describes how a city can grow to have many tall buildings, like Manhattan in New York City.
In 1995, a company called Shorenstein became the full owner of the building. They spent about US$5 million to make the lobby and outdoor plaza look new and modern.
Changing Signs on the Tower
One California is special because it's one of the few tall office buildings in downtown San Francisco that has a company sign at its very top. When the building was first completed, the sign said "Mutual Benefit Life". This was the name of an insurance company.
After the building was constructed, the city made a new rule. This rule said that new buildings could not have signs higher than 100 feet (about 30 meters). However, older buildings like One California were allowed to keep their signs. They could even change the sign, as long as the new sign wasn't bigger than the old one. This is called being "grandfathered in."
After Mutual Benefit Life closed down, the building's sign was changed in April 1995. The new sign showed the logo for AirTouch, a company that had its main offices in the building. Then, in October 2005, the AirTouch signs were taken down. They were replaced with the current sign for US Bank.
