How Oneco Got Its Name
The name "Oneco" has an interesting story, and there are two main ideas about where it came from:
- Native American Link: One idea is that the name comes from a Native American word. It might be related to "Oneka," who was the oldest son of Uncas, a famous chief of the Mohegan Indian tribe.
- "One Company" Town: Another story says the name came from a local business. There was once a very important business called the Reasoner Nursery in the area. People used to say that Oneco was a "one company" town because this nursery was so central to the community. Over time, "one company" might have been shortened to "Oneco."
Population Growth
Over the years, Oneco has grown quite a bit. For example, in 1920, about 772 people lived there. By 1980, the population had grown to over 6,400 people! This shows how Oneco became a more populated place over time.
