Onslow is a small, rural community in central Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It's not a town with its own government, but rather a part of the larger county. Onslow sits on the north bank of the Salmon River, right across from the town of Truro. This area is mostly known for its farms.

The first people to settle here were the Acadians. Later, in 1761, Irish settlers arrived and created Onslow Township. This happened after the Acadians had been forced to leave. The township was likely named after a person called Arthur Onslow.

Exploring Onslow's Location

Onslow is an important spot for travel in Nova Scotia. It's where two major highways meet: Highway 102 and Highway 104. This makes it easy to get to other parts of the province from Onslow.

Life in Onslow

Onslow is home to Central Colchester Junior High School. This school is part of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board. The community also has a John Deere dealership, which sells farm equipment. There's also a volunteer fire department, ready to help in emergencies.

Nature and Energy

If you visit Onslow in the fall or spring, you might see many Canada geese. These birds stop in the farmlands during their long migrations. Onslow is also a great place for wind turbines. The area often has strong winds. Because of this, some farmers have put up wind turbines on their land. These turbines help to create clean energy for their farms.

Powering the Region

Nova Scotia Power has a special point in Onslow. This is where electricity is sent out to different areas. It connects the power grid from Halifax Regional Municipality to places like Cape Breton, the South Shore, and even New Brunswick. This helps make sure homes and businesses across the region have electricity.
