The name Oostanaula has a special meaning. It comes from the Cherokee language. In Cherokee, "Oostanaula" means "shoally river." This describes a river that has many shallow, rocky areas, often called shoals.
A post office was opened in Oostanaula in 1881. People living there could send and receive their mail through this office. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1920.
