What Was the Opera of the Nobility?
The Opera of the Nobility was an opera company that started in 1733. A group of powerful nobles, led by Frederick, Prince of Wales, set it up. They wanted to challenge the existing opera company, the Royal Academy of Music. This company was supported by King George II of Great Britain and his queen, Caroline.
Starting a Rival Opera Company
The nobles created their own opera company to rival Handel's. They invited Nicola Porpora, a famous composer, to be their musical director. They also hired Owen Swiny to find the best singers. One of their main singers was Senesino, who had previously worked with Handel but had a disagreement with him.
The Opera of the Nobility first performed at a theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields. This theatre became available when its owner, John Rich, opened a new theatre called the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. The first opera performed by the new company was Arianna in Nasso by Porpora. This was a direct challenge to Handel, who had just presented his own opera, Arianna in Creta.
Famous Singers and Musicians
The company initially struggled in its first season (1733–1734). However, a very famous singer named Farinelli joined them later in the season. His arrival helped the company financially for a while. Even with Farinelli, the company faced many challenges.
After their first season, the Opera of the Nobility took over the King's Theatre from Handel's company. They also managed to hire some of Handel's best singers, like Francesca Cuzzoni and Antonio Montagnana.
The End of the Opera of the Nobility
The competition between the two opera companies was intense. The Opera of the Nobility went bankrupt and closed down in 1737. Just before it closed, Giovanni Battista Pescetti was appointed as its musical director.
Even though the Opera of the Nobility went bankrupt, it also caused Handel's company to go bankrupt. The remaining parts of both companies then joined together at the King's Theatre for the 1737–1738 season.
A Brief Return
Later, in 1741, a second Opera of the Nobility was formed. This new company was started by the Earl of Middlesex. However, this second attempt did not last for very long either.
