Operation Desert Spring was a special mission by the United States military in Kuwait. It started on December 31, 1998. What Was Operation Desert Spring?

Operation Desert Spring was a military effort by the United States. It began at the very end of 1998. The mission was important for several reasons:

  • Staying in the Area: It helped the U.S. military stay in Kuwait. This is called maintaining a "forward presence." It meant U.S. troops were ready in the region if needed.
  • Protecting Kuwait: A big part of the mission was to help protect Kuwait's military. This was called "force protection." It made sure Kuwait's defense forces were safe and secure.

When Did the Mission End?

Operation Desert Spring lasted for several years. It officially ended on March 18, 2003. This was when a new and much larger military operation began, called Operation Iraqi Freedom. The end of Desert Spring marked a shift in military focus in the region.

Who Participated in Operation Desert Spring?

Many brave service members from the United States military took part in Operation Desert Spring. For their service in this important mission, they were recognized with a special award. Those who participated were given the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. This medal honors military personnel who serve in certain U.S. military operations outside of the United States.
