Ora Frances Porter (born 1880, died 1970) was a very important nurse. She was the first registered nurse in Warren County, Kentucky. She was also the first African American person from Butler County to earn a college degree.

Ora Frances Porter was an African American woman. She was born in a place called Sugar Grove, Kentucky. Her mother's name was Sarah J. Porter. When Ora was 10 years old, her family moved to Bowling Green. She lived there for a long time. Her home was near Cecilia Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Her Education and Career

Ora Porter studied nursing at the Tuskegee University School of Nursing in Alabama. After she finished her studies, she became a nurse. This made her the first African American from Butler County to get a college degree. She was a pioneer!

Ora Porter also helped start the George Washington Carver Community Center. This center was a local group that worked to bring people of different races together. She helped create it after World War II.

Remembering Ora Porter

People remember Ora F. Porter for her important work. A special historical marker was put up in Bowling Green to honor her. It is located at 715 College Street. This marker helps people learn about her life and achievements.

The marker was dedicated 35 years after she passed away. At the event, the president of the Warren County Medical Society said something very special. He said that people in the medical field believed she was the very first registered nurse in the entire state of Kentucky.
