Andrea di Cione di Arcangelo (born around 1308 – died August 25, 1368), known as Orcagna, was a talented Italian artist. He was a painter, sculptor, and architect who worked in the city of Florence. Orcagna helped design the Florence Cathedral and oversaw building work at the Orvieto Cathedral. His famous artwork, the Strozzi Altarpiece (created 1354–57), showed Christ in a new way, highlighting his role in Catholic teachings.

Famous Artworks by Orcagna

Orcagna created many important pieces of art. Here are some of his well-known works:

  • "Altarpiece of the Redeemer" (1354–57): This large artwork is found in the Strozzi di Mantova Chapel at Santa Maria Novella in Florence.
  • The Tabernacle in Orsanmichele (finished 1359): This beautiful structure was considered one of the best Gothic artworks of its kind in Italy.
  • The Triumph of Death (fresco): This wall painting was so powerful that it inspired Franz Liszt to create his famous music piece, Totentanz.
  • Crucifixion (fresco): This painting shows many angels around the cross against a dark background. He also painted some parts of The Last Supper around 1365.

Orcagna also worked on the cathedral of Orvieto. He became the Master of the Works there in 1359. He is believed to have designed the mosaic decorations and the large rose window of the cathedral.

Orcagna's Students and Legacy

Orcagna was also a teacher and influenced other artists. Some of his students and family members who followed in his footsteps include:

  • Nello di Vanni: A painter from Pisa who worked in the 1300s. He also created art for the Campo Santo.
  • Tommaso del Mazza: Also known as Tomasso di Marco.
  • Jacopo di Cione: Andrea's brother, who was mainly a sculptor and architect.
