Boothville-Venice was a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP) in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It included the smaller areas of Boothville, Venice, and Orchard. In the year 2000, about 2,220 people lived there.

Later, for the 2010 census, Boothville-Venice was divided into two separate CDPs: Boothville and Venice.

Boothville was the largest and most northern part of this area. All these communities are located along Louisiana Highway 23. They sit on the west side of the famous Mississippi River. Boothville is home to the Boothville Heliport. This heliport is very important for helicopters that fly to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Venice is the southernmost town along Highway 23. It is protected by a special wall called a levee. Orchard, which is sometimes thought of as part of Venice, is outside this levee. It has a boat marina and buildings built high up on stilts. The Boothville-Venice area also includes Tidewater. This community has many port and oil facilities. It also has a weather station.

History of Boothville-Venice

How Hurricane Katrina Affected the Area

Boothville is very close to where Hurricane Katrina hit land on August 29, 2005. This was a very powerful storm. News reports said that not much was left standing in Boothville or Venice. The few buildings that survived had water up to their rooftops. Even the orange groves in the area were completely underwater.

One building stood strong against the storm. This was the Boothville-Venice High School. It was built after other big hurricanes, Betsy and Camille. The school was built on concrete stilts, about 14 feet (4.3 meters) above the ground. This helped protect the classrooms from the storm surge, which is a wall of ocean water pushed inland by a storm. The school also had tall, narrow windows. This design helped stop windows from breaking from flying debris.

After the hurricane, the school was reopened in 2006. It became the Boothville-Venice Elementary School.

The total area of this former community was about 5.1 square miles (13.2 square kilometers). A little more than half of this area was land. The rest, about 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers), was water. This shows how close the community was to the water.
