Valdemar Rodrigues Martíns, known by his nickname Oreco, was a famous Brazilian football player. He was born in Santa Maria, Brazil, on June 13, 1932. Oreco was a talented left back, a player who helps protect the goal and also helps attack. He is most famous for being part of the Brazilian team that won the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He passed away on April 3, 1985, in Ituverava, Brazil.
Oreco's Football Journey
Oreco started his football career in 1949 with a club called Internacional (Santa Maria). This was the beginning of a long and successful journey in the world of football.
Playing for Different Teams
After his first club, Oreco joined Internacional (from Porto Alegre) in 1950. He played there for seven years, until 1957. During this time, he became a very important player for the team.
In 1957, Oreco moved to another big Brazilian club, Corinthians. He stayed with Corinthians for eight years, until 1965. This was a significant part of his career, playing for one of Brazil's most popular teams.
Later in his career, Oreco also played for teams outside of Brazil. From 1965 to 1968, he played for Millonarios in Colombia. After that, he moved to Mexico, playing for Toluca from 1968 to 1970.
His last professional club was Dallas Tornado in the United States, where he played from 1970 to 1972. He played 38 games for Dallas Tornado before ending his playing career.
Winning Big Trophies
Oreco won many important titles throughout his career. He was a champion in different leagues and tournaments.
- Campeonato Gaúcho Champions: Oreco won this state championship in Brazil five times with Internacional. These wins were in 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1955.
- 1958 FIFA World Cup: This was one of his biggest achievements. He was part of the Brazilian national team that won the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. This is the most prestigious football tournament in the world.
- Mustang Cup (Colombian League): In 1966, Oreco won the top league title in Colombia with Millonarios.
- NASL Championship: In 1971, he won the North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship with Dallas Tornado.
Oreco also played for the Brazilian national team in other important tournaments. He was part of the team that won the 1956 Panamerican Championship in Mexico. He also helped Brazil reach second place in the 1957 South American Championship (now known as Copa América) in Peru.
