Orla is a small, quiet place in Reeves County, Texas, in the United States. It's about 38 miles (61 km) north of a town called Pecos. Orla is sometimes called a ghost town because very few people live there. It even has its own post office, which opened a long time ago in 1906! You can find it along U.S. Route 285.
A Look Back at Orla's History
Orla started in 1890. It was built as a stop for the new Pecos Valley Railroad. This railroad was created by John J. Hagerman to connect towns like Carlsbad, New Mexico, with Pecos, Texas.
Orla's Population Changes
For many years, only a few people lived in Orla. But during World War II, more people moved there. The town grew to almost 60 residents, and new businesses opened.
The biggest growth happened in the 1960s. About 250 people lived in Orla then. This was because of new jobs in oil, gas, and sulfur mining in the area.
Orla Today
Recently, Orla has seen a new boom! Because oil prices have gone up, the town is busy again. There are new gas stations, restaurants, and places for workers to live. Many construction companies are also working there.
Orla's Climate
Orla has a very sunny climate all year. This is because of the way the air moves and the high pressure in the area. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Orla has a Bwh climate. This means it has a desert climate, which is very dry and hot.
