Ormsby County was a special area, like a district, in Nevada. It existed as a county in the Nevada Territory from 1861 to 1864. After Nevada became a state, it continued as a county in the State of Nevada until 1969. This county was home to Carson City, which was its main town and later became the capital city of Nevada.
How Ormsby County Got Its Name
Ormsby County was named after Major William Ormsby. He was one of the first people to settle in Carson City. In 1860, Major Ormsby was killed during a conflict near Pyramid Lake in Nevada. This area was part of the Utah Territory at the time. He and 75 other men were trying to deal with a situation involving the Paiute people when the conflict happened.
A Look at Ormsby County's History

Ormsby County was officially created in 1861 when the Nevada Territory was formed. For a while, its population grew, especially during the gold rush days. However, after the gold rush ended, fewer people lived there.
By the late 1940s, Ormsby County was mostly just Carson City and a few small villages nearby. In 1960, about 8,300 people lived in the county, but most of them (around 5,400) lived right in Carson City.
After World War II, people started talking about combining Carson City and Ormsby County. This idea was discussed for many years. Finally, in 1966, people across Nevada voted on the idea, and they approved it. A change to the state's constitution was needed, and this was passed in 1968.
On April 1, 1969, Ormsby County and Carson City officially joined together. They became one single government called the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City. This meant Ormsby County no longer existed as a separate county.
