History of Orrtanna

Orrtanna started in 1885. It grew around a train stop called Orr Station on the Baltimore and Harrisburg Railway.

How Orrtanna Got Its Name

The community was first known as Wortzville. This name came from George Wortz, a local businessman. Later, it was changed to Orr Station, and then to Orr Glen.

In 1892, a post office was going to open. People realized that "Orr Glen" was already a name used by another town in Pennsylvania. So, they changed the name one last time to Orrtanna. This new name honored Isaiah Orr, who owned a lot of land nearby, and a tannery (a place where animal hides are made into leather).
