Ortún Velázquez de Velasco was a Spanish conquistador. He was born around 1500 in Cuéllar, which was part of Castile in the Spanish Empire. He passed away on November 4, 1584, in Pamplona, located in what was then called the New Kingdom of Granada. He is famous for helping to start the city of Pamplona in Colombia. He also became its first governor.
Adventures in the Americas
Ortún Velázquez de Velasco joined a big trip led by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. This journey was part of the Spanish conquest of the Muisca people. It happened between 1536 and 1539.
After this expedition, Ortún settled in a city called Tunja. He lived there under the rule of Gonzalo Suárez Rendón. In 1544, he even became the mayor of Tunja. He left Tunja in 1548.
Starting in 1549, he took part in another important event. This was the conquest of the Chitarero people. He also helped Pedro de Ursúa to establish the city of Pamplona.
About His Life
Ortún Velázquez de Velasco was born around the year 1500. His hometown was Cuéllar, in the Segovia Province of Castile and León. He was the only son of Gutierre Velázquez de Cuéllar and María Enríquez de Acuña. He also had one sister named Ana Velázquez.
In 1545, Ortún married Luisa Montalvo de Lugo in Tunja. They had three children together: one son and two daughters. Their daughter, María Velázquez de Velasco y Montalvo, later married another conquistador named Juan Maldonado Ordóñez.
