After this expedition, Ortún settled in a city called Tunja. He lived there under the rule of Gonzalo Suárez Rendón. In 1544, he even became the mayor of Tunja. He left Tunja in 1548.

Starting in 1549, he took part in another important event. This was the conquest of the Chitarero people. He also helped Pedro de Ursúa to establish the city of Pamplona.
