Scientists first explored Orwell Glacier a long time ago. People from the Discovery Investigations (DI) surveyed it in 1927. They named the glacier after a Norwegian ship. This ship helped them with their work between 1925 and 1930. Later, in 1947, the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) explored the glacier again.
