Osborn (also called Osborn Townsite) is a special place in Yellowstone County, Montana, United States. It's a "populated place," meaning some people live there. But it's also known as a ghost town. This means it was once a busy town that became much quieter over time. Even so, many of its original homes are still standing and used today.
The Story of Osborn
Osborn started as a town in 1907. It was built along a big water system called the Huntley Project. This project helped bring water to farms in the area. Osborn even had its own train station, which was important for travel and trade back then.
The town also had a post office. But it only stayed open for six years, closing in 1914. This was a sign that the town was becoming less busy.
Later, in 1928, the government decided to use some of Osborn's land. They set aside several blocks for the Department of Agriculture. This land became an agricultural field station, a place where scientists study farming.
Osborn Today
Today, Osborn is a unique place that helps us learn about the past. The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture is located on about 10.4 acres of the old townsite. This museum has preserved 18 buildings from the early 1900s. It's like stepping back in time to see how homesteaders lived.
The Southern Agricultural Research Center is also found here. This center continues the work of studying agriculture. There's also a small fairground where people can gather for events.
Even though Osborn is a "ghost town," it's been kept in great condition. It's like a living museum! While the original shops and businesses are gone, many of the first homes are still standing. People even live in them today.
