A Look Back: Osbornsville's History
Early Days and Growth
Osbornsville got its name from the Osborn family. They were some of the first people to settle in the area. Back in 1882, people described Osbornsville as a busy and growing village. It had about 720 residents. By 1909, it was seen as a great spot for a summer vacation.
The Osbornville Airport
In 1942, an airport for small planes opened in Osbornsville. It was known by a few names, including Osbornville Airport and Ocean County Airport. This airport had two runways that were not paved. It also had a business that sold planes made by Aeronca Aircraft Corporation. The airport was used for teaching people how to fly. It also offered passenger flights and airplane repairs.
The airport stopped working in 1954. This happened after a big fire destroyed the main building where planes were kept. Ten aircraft were also lost in the fire.
From Airport to Homes
After the airport closed, the land was divided into smaller pieces in 1958. These pieces became building lots for new houses. This area was named Sky Manor Estates. It was one of the first housing developments built after the Garden State Parkway opened. The parkway made it easier for people to travel to work.
If you visit Sky Manor, you might notice some street names. Many of them are named after famous airplanes or aviation companies. For example, you can find streets like Boeing Drive, Lockheed Road, and Northrop Road.
