Oscar's Early Life and Learning
Oscar Auerbach was born in Manhattan, New York City. His parents had moved there from Europe. Even though he didn't finish high school or college in the usual way, he was very smart. He got into New York University by taking special tests. Later, he went to New York Medical College and became a doctor in 1929. He also studied a special kind of medicine called pathology in Vienna, where he met his wife. Pathology is the study of diseases and what causes them.
Oscar's Work as a Doctor
Dr. Auerbach worked at hospitals in Staten Island, New York, during the 1930s and 1940s. These included Sea View Hospital and Halloran Hospital.
Starting in 1952, he worked for the Veterans Administration. This is a government group that helps people who have served in the military. He was a very important medical researcher there until he passed away.
He also taught medicine to students for many years. He taught at New York Medical College for 12 years and at New Jersey Medical School for about 30 years.
Researching Smoking and Cancer
