The Otamatea River is a river found in the Northland Region of New Zealand. It is a short but wide river. It flows towards the southwest and can be thought of as an arm of the northern Kaipara Harbour.
What is the Otamatea River?
The Otamatea River forms where two other rivers meet: the Wairau River and the Kaiwaka River. The North Auckland Line, a railway track, crosses the river at this point.
How Wide is the Otamatea River?
When the Otamatea River first begins, it is almost 300 metres (330 yd) wide. As it gets closer to its mouth, which is across from Tinopai, the river becomes much wider, reaching about 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) across.
Other Waterways Joining the Otamatea
Several other wide tidal creeks flow into the Otamatea River. On its left side, you'll find Raepare Creek, Awaroa Creek, Takahoa Creek, and the Whakaki River. On the right side, the Arapaoa River joins the Otamatea.
