History and Culture in Tinopai
Early Days: Te Komiti
The area was first known as Te Komiti. It was a common stop for Māori travellers using the Kaipara Harbour. In 1852, a large church made of raupo (a type of reed) was built here. It was big enough to hold hundreds of people.
Fruit Growing and New Name
In 1915, a group called the Komiti Fruitlands Development Association bought a large area of land. They planned to grow fruit, especially apples. To help ship the apples, they built a wharf in 1917. In 1918, they changed the area's name to "Tinopai Fruitlands." However, apple growing stopped in the mid-1930s. This was due to the Great Depression and problems with how the farms were managed.
Māori Meeting Places: Marae
There are several important marae (traditional Māori meeting grounds) in the Tinopai area. These marae are special places for the local Māori people. They are used for gatherings, ceremonies, and to connect with their history and culture.
- Ngā Tai Whakarongorua Marae and its meeting house, also called Ngā Tai Whakarongorua, are connected to the Te Uri o Hau and Ngāti Whātua iwi (tribes).
- Waihaua / Arapaoa Marae and its Kirihipi meeting house are also linked to Te Uri o Hau and Ngāti Whātua.
- Rāwhitiroa Marae and its Rāwhitiroa meeting house are a meeting place for Te Uri o Hau and the Ngāti Whātua hapū (sub-tribe) called Te Popoto.
- The Waiōhou and Waiotea / Tinopai marae grounds are also important meeting places for both iwi.
