History of Otay Mountain
The name "Otay" comes from the Kumeyaay word otie. This word means "brushy," which describes the plants growing on the mountain.
Past Events on Otay Mountain
On March 16, 1991, a small airplane crashed into the side of Otay Mountain. The plane had taken off from a nearby airport. It was carrying ten people, including members of a singer's band. This was a very sad event.
Otay Mountain has also experienced several wildfires. In 2003, the plants on the mountain "burned completely." Another wildfire happened later in 2007. These fires can change the landscape a lot.
The Border Fence and Nature
A border fence runs through the Otay Mountain area. This fence is part of the border between Mexico and the United States. Its purpose is to help control who crosses between the two countries.
However, the fence has also caused concerns about its effects on nature. For example, some people have criticized its construction. An author named Rob Davis said that trucks building the fence kicked up a lot of dust. This dust created a difficult environment for a type of butterfly living there. Building the fence in this area is very expensive. It is estimated to cost about $16 million for every mile.
