Otmar Gutmann (born April 24, 1937 – died October 13, 1993) was a talented German filmmaker. He was a master of animation, especially known for his work with stop-motion. You might know him best as the co-creator of the super popular TV show Pingu. He created this show with Erika Brueggemann.

Otmar Gutmann's Animation Journey
Otmar Gutmann started making films as a hobby in the 1960s. He later became a professional filmmaker. One of his special early works was a film called Aventures (1978). This film was inspired by music from Gyorgy Ligeti. It used sculptures by Lubomir Stepan to tell a story about what it means to be human.
Creating Characters with Clay
In 1980, Otmar Gutmann became a key animator for a show called Lucy the Menace of Street. He helped bring the characters Frédéric and Frédéri to life. These characters were made from plasticine, a type of modeling clay. This is a common material used in stop-motion animation.
The Birth of Pingu
Otmar Gutmann designed the famous character Pingu in 1986. Pingu is a lovable penguin who lives in the Arctic. The TV series about Pingu became a huge hit all over the world. Otmar Gutmann and Erika Brueggemann worked together to create this successful show.
Otmar Gutmann's Later Years
Otmar Gutmann sadly passed away on October 13, 1993. He was 56 years old and died from a heart attack. He was buried in Russikon Cemetery.
After his death, Otmar Gutmann's company, The Pygos Group, kept making new Pingu episodes. A new team of animators and creators continued his work. Later, in October 2001, the company closed down. The rights to Pingu and other assets were then sold to HIT Entertainment.
