History of the Otoe County Courthouse

The first Otoe County Courthouse was a simple two-story building. It was built in 1865 by William R. Craig and F. W. Wood. At that time, it cost $22,500 to build. This new building was a big improvement. Before this, county offices were in small rooms in local stores. At one point, they even used a small cabin!

Building Additions Over Time

The courthouse grew bigger over the years. The first part was added in 1882. This addition created a large wing connected to the original square building. This new wing was used for courtrooms and other department offices.

Later, in 1936, another wing was added. This second addition looked exactly like the first one. It also provided more space for courts and offices. Inside the courthouse, there is a special painting. This mural shows the history of Nebraska City and the story of the courthouse itself.
