Ottumwa got its own post office in 1904. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open until 1983. The name "Ottumwa" comes from a city in Ottumwa, Iowa. Some of the first people who settled in this area came from Ottumwa, Iowa. They named their new home after their old one.
