Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, Heston facts for kids
Our Lady Queen of Apostles is a Catholic church located in Heston, a part of London. You can find it between The Green and Heston Road, right across from Rosary Catholic Primary School. This church was built in the early 1960s. It features beautiful stained glass windows made by Pierre Fourmaintraux and is part of a special area protected for its history and beauty.
A Look Back in Time
At first, the Catholic community in Heston had a smaller church. It was looked after by a group called the White Fathers. They started the local church community, known as a parish, in 1928. The original church building was finished in 1929.
By the 1960s, the area had grown a lot, and the old church was too small. A new, bigger church was needed! It was built where some Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa used to live.
The first stone for the new church was laid on 13 July 1963. The church then opened its doors in 1964. It was designed by a team called Burles, Newton & Partners. This new church could hold between 450 and 500 people. It was officially made sacred on 19 May 1974.
Since 1 October 2017, another group of priests, called the Vocationist Fathers, have been serving the church community.
The Church Community
In 1972, Rosary Catholic Primary School was built nearby. This school and the church have a close connection, working together for the local community.
