History of the Church
Early Beginnings
In 1918, a small religious group, called a mission, started in Steel Road. By 1921, this group was known as St Bride. A priest named George Mesher lived there with three people who boarded with him, Frank Warwick and his family.
Building the Church
Later, in 1930, land was bought to build a proper church. A temporary church was put up in 1931. This was a simple building used while plans for the main church were made. The church you see today was finished in 1936. It was designed by a skilled architect named Ernest Bower Norris.
Church Design and Art
The church is built using red bricks. It has a main area called a nave with windows high up, known as clerestories. There are also side sections called aisles, a chancel (the area around the altar), and a small south chapel. The church has a bell tower above the porch on the southwest side. Inside, you can see a very large painting, or mural, of the Resurrection. This impressive artwork was created by Neil Harvey and was finished in the year 2000.
The Church Organ
The church has a special musical instrument called an organ. This organ was made by Harris Organ Ltd. If you are interested in learning more about its details, you can find information about it on the National Pipe Organ Register.
