History of the Church
Building the Church
In 1880, the Servites decided to start a new church in Bognor Regis. This was called a "mission" at the time. On October 26, 1881, they laid the first stone for the church. This is known as the foundation stone.
The main architect for the church was Joseph Stanislaus Hansom. His father, also named Joseph Hansom, was a famous architect too. Joseph Stanislaus Hansom also helped design another Servite church in London.
On August 16, 1882, the church officially opened. Canon John Butt led the opening ceremony. He later became a very important bishop. However, the church was not completely finished at this time. Parts like the main hall (nave) and side sections (transepts) were still missing. A temporary wall was put up so people could still use the church.
Finishing the Work
The church was finally completed much later, between 1955 and 1957. Another architect, Wilfrid Clarence Mangan, finished Hansom's original plans. He was supposed to complete the church in 1939, but World War II stopped the work.
Joseph Stanislaus Hansom also designed a building for the Servite priests next to the church. This building was called a priory. In the 1980s, the priory was taken down. New apartments were built in its place.
In 1985, the inside of the church was changed to make it more modern. Then, in 1994, the Servites gave the church to the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. This group now manages the church and its local community.
The Parish Community
The church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Bognor Regis is part of a larger parish. A parish is a group of local churches. This parish also includes two other churches: St Richard of Chichester Church in Slindon and St Anthony of Viareggio Church in Rose Green, Aldwick.
St Richard of Chichester Church
St Richard of Chichester Church is located in Slindon. It is on Top Road, across from Church Hill. This church also became a Grade II listed building in 2005.
The money to build this church came from a man named Anthony Radclyffe, the 5th Earl of Newburgh. He passed away in 1814 and left money for a Catholic church in Slindon. However, his wife wanted to keep using their family chapel. So, the church was not built until after she passed away.
Construction on St Richard’s Church began in 1865. It was designed by Charles Alban Buckler. He designed many churches, including ones in Shoreham-by-Sea and St Leonards-on-Sea.
St Anthony of Viareggio Church
In 1961, a man named Mr. Brown gave St Anthony of Viareggio Church to the Servite Friars. It was originally a house (bungalow). It was changed and updated to become a church. A priest named Fr Anselm Hislop helped with the changes and added the church tower. On May 6, 1963, the church was opened by Cyril Cowderoy, who was the Archbishop of Southwark at the time.
