Linebacker facts for kids

A linebacker is a special player on the defensive team in American football. Their main job is to stop the other team from scoring. They are like the "middle managers" of the defense, helping to direct plays and make big tackles.
There are two main types of linebackers:
- Outside Linebackers (OLB): These players usually stand on the edges of the defensive line. They try to tackle players, especially the quarterback, and sometimes they drop back to help stop passes.
- Middle Linebackers (MLB): Often called the "quarterback of the defense," the middle linebacker is usually in the center. They are leaders who help tell other defensive players where to go. Their main job is to make tackles and stop the run.

Linebacker Formations
Linebackers play in different setups, called "formations," depending on the team's strategy.
The 4-3 Defense
In a 4-3 defense, there are four defensive linemen and three linebackers. This usually means two outside linebackers and one middle linebacker. It's a common formation that balances stopping the run and defending against passes.
The 4-4 Defense
A 4-4 defense uses four defensive linemen and four linebackers. This formation has more linebackers, which means it's often very strong at stopping running plays. It can put a lot of pressure on the other team's offense.
Special Names for Linebackers
Sometimes, linebackers are given special names based on their position in a formation. These names help players know their specific roles:
