Overisel Township is a small area in Allegan County, in the state of Michigan, United States. In 2020, about 3,113 people lived here.
The name Overisel comes from a Dutch province called Overijssel. A famous mathematician named George David Birkhoff was born in Overisel. He is known for his work in something called the ergodic theorem.

Exploring Overisel's Communities
Overisel Township is home to a few interesting communities, each with its own story.
Bentheim: A Historic Settlement
- Bentheim is a community with Dutch and German roots. It was settled in the mid-1800s. You can find Bentheim near the Rabbit River, on the far eastern side of the Township.
Drenthe: A Journey from Baltimore
- Drenthe is another Dutch community. The first person to settle here was Jan Hulst in 1847. His family traveled all the way from Baltimore, which took six weeks by ox-cart!
Overisel Village: A Close-Knit Place
- Overisel itself is a very close-knit community located in the far western part of Overisel Township. It was settled in 1848 by just 12 Dutch families. Today, the village has two churches, a feed mill, and many family-owned farms.
