Ovidiu Stîngă was born on December 5, 1972, in Craiova, Romania. He is a Romanian football coach and a former player. Currently, he is the head coach for the Under-19 team at Al Sadd SC.

Playing Career Highlights

Ovidiu Stîngă started his football journey at Viitorul Craiova. In 1990, when he was just 17, he played his first league game for Universitatea Craiova. This match was against Corvinul Hunedoara.

Early Years in Romania

After his debut, Ovidiu was loaned to Jiul IELIF Craiova for a short time. He returned to Universitatea Craiova in 1991. In the 1992–93 season, he became one of the team's best players. His team finished third in the league and won the Cupa României, which is like Romania's main football cup.

Playing in Spain

In the summer of 1995, Ovidiu moved to Spain to play for UD Salamanca. He played his first game in Spain's top league, Primera División, on September 3 against Espanyol. His team won that game 3–1. He scored 11 goals for Salamanca, making him the team's second-highest scorer. However, the club finished last and moved down to a lower league.

Time in the Netherlands with PSV

In 1996, Stîngă joined the Dutch team PSV Eindhoven. In his first season in the Eredivisie, the top Dutch league, he played only seven matches. But in the 1997–98 season, he became a very important player for PSV. They finished second in the Dutch Championship that year.

In 1998, Ovidiu had a serious injury that kept him from playing for about a year. He only played one game in the 1998–99 season. Despite this, he helped PSV win two Dutch Championship titles in a row in 2000 and 2001. He also helped them win the Dutch Super Cup multiple times.

Return to Romania and Retirement

In the summer of 2001, Ovidiu came back to Romania. He signed with Dinamo București and won the league title with them. For the next two seasons, he played for Universitatea Craiova again, returning after seven years away.

In the 2004–05 season, he was loaned to Helmond Sport, a Dutch team in a lower division. In 2006, he took on a new role at Universitatea Craiova. He was both a player and a manager for the team in the Romanian second division. He helped his team get promoted back to the first league in the 2006–07 season. After this, he ended his playing career.

International Football for Romania

Ovidiu Stîngă played for the Romanian national team. His first game was on January 31, 1993, in a friendly match against Ecuador.

In 1994, he was part of Romania's team for the World Cup in the United States. However, he did not play in any games during that tournament. In 1996, he was chosen by coach Anghel Iordănescu to play in the European Championship in England. He played one match there against Spain. He also represented his country at the World Cup 1998 in France. Overall, he played 24 games for Romania between 1993 and 1999.
