Oviedo is a city and a special area called a municipality in the Pedernales province of the Dominican Republic. It is the city located furthest south in the Dominican Republic. It is also the southernmost city on the entire Hispaniola island.
Oviedo became a municipality in 1957. It covers an area of about 799.86 square kilometers. In 2012, its population was around 10,986 people. The city is about 60 kilometers away from Pedernales, which is the capital of the province.
Climate in Oviedo
Oviedo has a tropical savanna climate, often called "Aw" in climate maps. This means the weather is generally warm or hot all year round. There are usually two main seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.
The average high temperatures are usually above 28°C (82°F) throughout the year. The warmest months are typically July and August. Even the lowest temperatures rarely drop below 19°C (66°F).
Oviedo receives a good amount of rainfall, especially during certain months. September often sees the most rain. The driest months are usually February and March. This type of climate supports various plants and animals adapted to both wet and dry periods.
