Oxon Hill Manor is a large, beautiful house with 49 rooms. It is located in Forest Heights, Maryland, in Prince George's County, Maryland. The house was designed in 1928 for a man named Sumner Welles by an architect named Jules Henri de Sibour.

The manor was built in 1929. It has two main floors made of brick, and a wing on the north side. On the property, there are also other buildings that were built at the same time. These include a large garage for five cars, a manager's living area, a greenhouse, and a stable. The grounds also feature lovely formal gardens.

History of Oxon Hill Manor

The land where Oxon Hill Manor stands has a long and interesting history. A very old family, the Addison family, built a mansion here way back in 1711. They were important in the early days of Prince George's County.

Later, in 1778, Thomas Hawkins Hanson bought the property. He was the nephew of John Hanson, an important person in early American history. John Hanson actually passed away at Oxon Hill Manor in 1783 and was buried on the property.

The original Oxon Hill Manor house burned down in 1895. Then, in 1927, Sumner Welles bought the land. Sumner Welles was a very important diplomat for the United States government. He decided to build the beautiful manor house that stands there today.

Many famous people visited Oxon Hill Manor when Sumner Welles lived there. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was a U.S. President, was a guest. It's also possible that Winston Churchill, who was the leader of Great Britain during World War II, visited the manor.

After Sumner Welles, the house was owned by Fred Maloof. He was a wealthy businessman and art collector. He even created a museum at the manor for his art and items related to John Hanson. Eventually, the property was taken care of by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Because of its history and importance, Oxon Hill Manor was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This is a special list of places that are important to American history.
