Pétrola is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Albacete in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. It is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) away from Albacete, which is the capital city of the province. The name Pétrola comes from an old Roman word, "petra," which means 'stone'.
Nature and Environment
Pétrola is found in a green and fertile valley. This area gets plenty of water from small rivers and beautiful cascades. The town is especially known for its unique salt water lagoon. This lagoon is so special that it is protected as a nature reserve.
Population and People
As of 2023, about 669 people live in Pétrola. However, during the summer months, the town becomes much busier! Its population can grow to almost 2,000 people. Many of these summer visitors are the children and grandchildren of people who used to live in Pétrola but moved away. They come back to visit their hometown.
Economy and Jobs
The main ways people make a living in Pétrola are through farming and raising animals. Farmers grow crops like cereals and grapes for making wine. Many people also raise lambs and sheep, which are important for the local economy.
